I have my Geometry classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Because of the Labor Day Holiday, we didn't have school on Monday.
On Wednesday, we talked about Points, Lines, & Planes. I intended to start with this PowerPoint that I got from Dan Meyer's website, but completely forgot to do it. It worked out, though, because between setting up their INB's and the rest of the lesson, I had just enough time in the class period to get through it all. I used these foldables that I found on Sarah's blog, Everybody Is a Genius.

Then I had the students complete this Google Slides activity I found on Mrs. Newell's website. I assigned it in Google Classroom and it was sooooo easy to grade. And the kids loved getting to use their new chromebooks!

On Friday, we talked about Angles. I used these two foldables from Mrs. Newell's website. The first one goes over basic angle vocabulary, The second one is a really cool wheel that defines some of the important angle relationships that students need to be familiar with.

Their assignment was this free Always-Sometimes-Never worksheet I found on Teachers Pay Teachers.

I have my Algebra classes on Tuesday and Thursday.

On Tuesday, we learned about the real number system. I bought this foldable on Teachers Pay Teachers. Then we talked about how to classify numbers using the Just Follow the Yellow Brick Road paper. (I can't remember where this came from!). Their assignment was to complete the Classifying Rational Numbers Mystery Pattern activity I bought on Teachers Pay Teachers.

On Thursday, we reviewed solving multi-step equations. I've had this flip book for awhile and can't for the life of me figure out where it came from. But it's a great support for kids who struggle to know what to do next when solving mult-step equations. Most of my Algebra 2 students are pretty comfortable solving equations already, but for those who aren't, this is a good resource. They worked together in their groups to complete this puzzle that I got for free on Teachers Pay Teachers.

On Tuesday we reviewed the Coordinate Plane using this foldable I got for free on Teachers Pay Teachers. Then I turned them loose to complete three different Desmos activities - The (Awesome) Coordinate Plane Activity, Battle Boats, and Mini Golf Marbleslides. On Thursday we talked about Discrete and Continuous functions. I started off with this foldable that I bought from Teachers Pay Teachers. Then I let the kids play around with a virtual Etch-a-Sketch and a virtual Lite Brite so they could get a feel for the difference between continuous and discrete. Their assignment was a worksheet I created on the website wizer.me. Wizer.me is a great tool for teachers in a 1:1 environment!

It was a great week. Our students are concurrently enrolled in high school and college and we had College Acceptance Night for our freshmen on Thursday night. The president of the college came and presented them each with a certificate to celebrate their achievement. I'm so proud of all of my students and I'm so blessed to get to teach BCHS Panthers!

On Monday, we started with Sarah Carter's Guess My Rule Game. The kids really enjoyed it and it reinforced the idea that math is about finding and describing patterns.

Then we did the Building Shapes activity from Week 3 of the WIM on Youcubed.org. This activity was really a challenge for the kids, especially a couple of the 3D shapes. I only had one group succesfully make the octahedron, and many struggled with the cube as well. But the struggle was a good struggle - the students all felt confident that they could make all of the shapes, even if they weren't completely successful doing it in the time they had to do it.

On Tuesday we did the same two activities, but because my Tuesday/Thursday classes are longer than my Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes, we also had time to do the Pascal's Triangle Activity from the WIM on Youcubed.org. I was blown away by the way the kids picked up on all the patterns by themselves. It really highlighted for me that I should expect more from them! I struggle with feeling like if I'm not telling them what they're supposed to see that I'm not teaching. It's really going to be a focus for me this year to work on supporting productive struggle in my students, and if I've learned anything from these past two weeks it's that my students are definitely up for the challenge! I heard multiple times "Illuminati confirmed!" as they worked on this activity. 😂

On Wednesday we did Pascal's Triangle and followed it up with the Painted Cube Problem from the second week of the WIM on Youcubed.org. I just loved all the activities we did these past two weeks and this one was no exception. Some groups struggled to figure out the 3x3x3 cube and others had no trouble with it and moved right on to the 4x4x4 and even the 5x5x5. They were able to generalize the patterns they noticed and make predictions about other sizes of cubes as well. I provided each group with about 50 snap together cubes - enough to build the 3x3x3 but not enough to completely build anything larger. I encouraged them to really focus on how they got the answer to the 3x3x3 and then try and extend what they noticed to the larger cubes and so many of them did a great job. This activity definitely gave me the opportunity to allow them struggle productively!

On Thursday we did the Painted Cube activity and then I gave them the rest of class to start on the project that I assigned to culminate our first two weeks. I came up with a choice board of nine different projects for them to choose from. I tried to address as many different "intelligences" as I could with the projects. I'm pretty proud of what I came up with and can't wait to see what my students submit!

On Friday, I assigned the project to my classes and gave them the entire class period to start working on it. While they were working, I took pictures of each student and asked them for their #oneword that they were going to really try and focus on this year. This was a challenge issued by one of our associate superintendents on Twitter and I extended the challenge to our students. Here are just a few of their responses.

We started the week with a solar eclipse and ended it with a hurricane here in Texas! Lucky for me my week at school wasn't as crazy as an eclipse and a hurricane!
I decided to put off going over things like the syllabus and rules and procedures until at least the second week of school this year. I dove right into working on establishing group norms and what good group work looks like as well as introducing mathematical mindsets and growth mindset to my students.
I'm on a block schedule and I have three preps. I did the same activities with all three preps, but because of the difference in the lengths of my Monday/Wednesday/Friday Geometry classes and my Tuesday/Thursday Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 classes, it was a little tricky to keep track of what I was doing with each class each day. This week definitely reinforced how important planning is! I use planbook.com for all of my lesson planning and I love it. You can create whatever template you want with whatever components you want, and my favorite part is they have state standards already included. You just choose which standards align with your lesson. They even have a screen where you can see how many times you've taught a specific standard and on what days you taught it. It's great!
In addition to the activities listed here, I've been showing the videos from the the first Week of Inspirational Math on Jo Boaler's YouCubed.org. We watched the first three this week and I'll show the last two next week. None of them are longer than about 3 minutes, they're very well done, and the messages are GREAT for introducing growth mindset and mathematical mindsets to students.

On Monday, I did Sara Van Der Werf's 100 #'s task. It was a fantastic first activity that led us right into a discussion of what good group work looks like. I made an anchor chart that summarizes the group norms we came up with based on this activity.

Next we did the Four 4's Activity. You can find the directions for this lots of places, but I'm including the link to the one from Youcubed. This was by far my favorite math activity we did this week, and it was a great first day activity because EVERYONE can contribute, no matter where they're at mathematically or how they feel about their math ability. At the end of the week I put posters up in the hallway challenging the kids to use four 4's to find all the numbers from 1 to 100, so hopefully this can be an ongoing activity that the kids can work on.

On Tuesday, we did these two activities plus I had time to do Sarah Carter's Broken Circles activity. Some of the groups had a little trouble with this since one person in the group starts with a complete circle. I had to repeat multiple times "REMEMBER, NO ONE is done until EVERYONE is done" in order for some of those kids who had complete circles to let go of their pieces to help the rest of the group. I added the words "NO ONE IS DONE UNTIL EVERYONE IS DONE" to the bottom of my group norms anchor chart after this activity. We had a great discussion about talking responsibility for your classmates learning and how to help each other.

On Wednesday we did Broken Circles and then Fawn Nguyen's Noah's Ark task. This was probably my second favorite math task from this week. I love that it's basically a pretty complicated system but one that can be solved through some pretty basic logic and reasoning. I did have to give a few hints here and there to get all the kids to solve it, but there were also lots of kids who got there on their own. Whenever a group told me they had an answer, I always responded with "CONVINCE ME!" I told them I didn't just want an answer, I wanted them to prove to me why their answer was right. I was so impressed with their explanations and the fact that I saw several different ways to get the answer! I encouraged kids to take the task home and challenge their families to solve it too.

On Thursday we did the Noah's Ark Task. We also played Sarah Carter's Rainbow Logic and Traffic Lights. Then we did the How Do You See the Pattern Growing activities from the Week of Inspirational Math on Youcubed.org. It was so enlightening for the kids to see all the different ways that their classmates saw the pattern growing. We talked about how important it is to be able to explain how you see patterns, to understand how others see them, and to be able to see them in lots of different ways in order to make sense of the algebra that we use to describe them later.

We finished up on Friday with Rainbow Logic, Traffic Lights, and the How Do You See the Pattern Growing activity. It was a great first week and I think the time lost to covering my actual course material will be paid back in spades by the thinking routines I'm establishing for my students now.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15504319184275421843noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534832837851416764.post-64436713423500077142017-08-16T09:28:00.004-07:002017-08-16T09:28:40.491-07:00New Classroom SetupFor a variety of reasons, I am the only one of the four teachers who were at my school last year who came back this year. My principal decided to have me move rooms just so that all of us would be prepping a new room together. I didn't mind - I find moving to be cathartic and it motivates me to declutter and streamline things.

In the spring last year, I received a DonorsChoose grant to create flexible seating in my classroom. I implemented it a little before the school year was over and my students LOVED IT! I added to it over the summer and am so excited to see how the students react when they return next week. Much of what you see on my walls came from people in the #MTBOS - shout outs to all of you who have contributed to my classroom decor!
I love my desks. I raised, lowered, and even removed some of the legs to accommodate different seating heights. These camping chairs were $7 at wal mart and the kids love them. I have two groups with this type of seating. I got the love seat for free from someone in my neighborhood.

I got the exercise balls as part of my DonorsChoose grant. I had a student unpack my things as they came in and I think he accidentally threw away the plugs for these, so I ordered more over the summer. I think some of my students are really going to enjoy these.

This is the back of my classroom. The bulletin board by the door is a birthday board. I am THE math teacher at my school, so I have every kid in my class at some point. This will be a good way for us to keep track of student birthdays for the whole school. Between the birthday board and the white board you can see a couple of my peg boards that I added this year. I'm so excited about them! The buckets underneath hold golf tees and yarn that the kids can use to make graphs on the pegboard.

I'm trying out classroom jobs this year. This is where I'll keep track of who has what job each period. I also made badges that the kids can wear during their class period so that I (and the other students) know who has what responsibilities.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15504319184275421843noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534832837851416764.post-90936248962768560412017-08-14T09:13:00.001-07:002017-08-14T09:13:44.704-07:00My First Day PlansYes, yes, I know - I'm doing the #SundayFunday post on a Monday! But I wanted to participate in the blogging challenge even if I'm late....
I would not have the plans that I have if it weren't for the amazing people in the #MTBOS who are always so ready and willing to share their stuff!

This year I'm teaching Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. I am THE math department at my school - we're only in our second year and with a student body of 150 kids, it was determined that one math teacher would do. So here I am!

My plans for the first day (for the first week, for that matter) are the same for all of my preps.

I'm going to start with Sara VanDerWerf's 100 #'s activity so that students know from day 1 what my expectations are in terms of group work and collaboration. I've never done this activity before, so I'm very excited about it! After the activity we'll debrief by coming up with some group norms for the year.

To give them some practice working appropriately in their groups, I'll start them on the Four 4's activity next. I don't know that we'll have time to do much with it, but I'm going to challenge them to come up with ways to get the numbers 1-20 to start. I'm going to hang some paper in the hallway so that over the course of the next few days or weeks they can try and come up with solutions for the numbers 1-100. I've never done this activity before, either, but I'm excited to try it as well. I think it will really help me as a teacher to start off allowing my students to struggle productively - something I've had trouble doing but something I KNOW is good for them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15504319184275421843noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534832837851416764.post-75468049702239054322017-08-06T12:27:00.002-07:002017-08-06T12:27:44.573-07:00My ONE GOAL for the 2017-2018 School Year

I work at a public high school in Texas, but my school is a school of choice - students must apply and be accepted into my school. We are an Early College High School - our students will (ideally) graduate with a high school diploma AND an associate's degree in four years. We just opened last year with a freshman class of 76 students and will add a new class each year (we're adding about 80 students this year).

The target demographic for our school is first generation college, low-socioeconomic and at risk students. Since we just opened we do have some students who don't fit our target demographic, but most of our students do. For almost all of our students not only are they taking college classes for the first time, they're taking Pre-AP classes for the first time, too (all of our high school offerings are designated Pre-AP). We help our students find success in our program by providing them with TONS of academic and social supports.

I am happy with how our first year went - almost all of my students passed their Algebra I EOC last year. Many have already passed the math portion of the TSI (similar to the Accuplacer) that is required in order for them enroll in college level math down the road.

But I do feel like I could put in some work when it comes to being more aware of where my students are mathematically on a student by student basis. As a whole, I can tell you what skills my students have mastered and which ones need more work. I know what deficits most (but not all) of my students come to my classroom with. I know where most (but not all) of my students will get hung up when introducing new concepts and I can usually plan my instruction accordingly. I know how to engage and motivate most (but not all) of my students. But I don't feel like I know where each of my students are at on their math journey on a truly individual basis. So that's my goal for this year - to spend more time one-on-one with my students. I want to spend more time watching them do math and less time showing them how to do math. I want to spend more time listening to them explain their thinking and less time telling them what or how to think.

I'm so thankful for the #SundayFunday blogging challenges and look forward to using them to help focus and refine my craft as a teacher over the course of this upcoming school year! ;)

Tomorrow I'll start my 18th year of teaching at a brand new school. I'm THE math teacher at Burleson Collegiate High School in Burleson, Texas. We will have 76 students in our inaugural class of Collegiate Panthers. Go Green, Black and Silver! Here's a peak into my new classroom. I love love love the student desks that we have! So many different ways to arrange them! And I'm thrilled to have such a huge space and two big windows in my room! It's been a long time since I had natural light in my classroom. You'll notice that there's lots in my room that came from Sarah over at Math=Love. She is the QUEEN of posters for the Math Classroom and much of what hangs on my walls came from her!

Starting the year off in pairs, but these desks are so easy to rearrange and there's so many different ways they can be configured!

Class information and the calendars where I'll post the assignment each day. I'll also hang a vertical file next to the calendars where absent students can find copies of the work they missed.

I got this from Sarah and I love it! I hung next to the whiteboard at the front of my room to remind me as much as my students that this is the philosophy in my classroom!

My desk area. If I had one complaint, it would be that this really cool looking desk has ZERO drawers in it. So I'm either going to learn how to do with less or it's going to end up being a mess!

I made my own version of an ABC's of Algebra that I saw on TPT. I can't bring myself to pay for something if I think I can fairly easily make it myself. I'm happy with how this turned out!

A reminder of some of my students from my last school. These are from the Top 10% Banquet that was held each year. The seniors in the top 10% chose an teacher who had a positive impact them to honor at the banquet and they wrote something about you. Definitely a highlight each year!

I'll be the only math teacher the first year, and I'll be teaching Algebra 1 and Geometry. Right now we're set to have about 70 freshmen next year and we'll add a class each year for the next three years.
With this new beginning comes renewed excitement and creativity. I look forward to the fresh start that this opportunity provides! One of the things I want to implement next year is centers, like what they have in elementary room classrooms. Here's a rough description of how I picture this working.

I plan on returning to my flipped classroom. So when students come to class, we'll do a quick debriefing of the video. Then I'll have them complete a google form to pick which 3-4 centers they want to visit they day. There's an add on for Google Forms called Choice Eliminator that will let me set how many students are allowed to choose a center during each rotation before the center is "full" and they have to choose something else. If they didn't watch the video the night before, then one of the centers they'll need to sign up for is "Watch Flip Video", so hopefully this will encourage them to watch the video at home since they'll sacrifice a "fun" center in order to catch up.

Here's a list of ideas I've come up with for different centers I can use. I obviously won't offer every option every day, but I can offer choices that are appropriate for the concept.

Review (over old concepts)

Activity (with partner or in group)

Explain (create GIF, video, infographic, etc. over concept)

One-on-one with teacher

I know lots of people use the "hand trick", and I do teach that to my students, but I like this trick better because I can write it down on paper and "see" what I'm doing a little easier. I taught it in Pre-Cal and I review it in AP Calculus. I tell the students who take the AP Exam that the first thing they should do when they get their test is write this down. If you combine it with a trick for remembering what's positive in each of the four quadrants of the unit circle, they can evaluate most any trig function on the test.

Drawing the Square Root:

In the spirit of the last post, I wanted to share another one of my favorites from my trig unit.

When we are wrapping up transformations of trig graphs, I assign a t-shirt project to my students. I love this project because it's easy to grade - they just stand in front of me and I check their work. It's also great because the back of the shirt really lets them show their personality and sense of humor. I'm always surprised by some of the stuff that they come up with as "reasons for studying trig"! I could only find one example to share - not sure what I did with all the others I know I saved, and I know the scale on the x-axis in this example is a little off, but it still gives you an idea of what a finished product looks like.

I didn't get to teach Pre-Calculus this year, which was really rough because I LOVE Pre-Cal, especially all of the trig! I was feeling nostalgic and thought I'd share an activity that I used at the very beginning of my trig unit. This activity helps kids understand the concept of a radian. And best of all, it involves CANDY which is the universal motivator! Students use twizzlers as a measurement tool. You need to use the pull up apart twizzlers, which can sometimes be a little hard to find, so make sure you don't wait until the last minute to get them!

One of my Calculus students' favorite lessons is the one I do to introduce particle motion. It's actually an activity that I got several years ago at a training I went to at our regional educational service center. It's called "Moving on Down the Line".

I ask for volunteers, but I don't tell them what they're volunteering for. The first 5 volunteers get a secret instruction card that only they can look at. The next 6 volunteers get data collection cards. The last volunteer will be the timekeeper. If you have enough students in your class you can make two groups and repeat the process for the second group.

I borrow a really long tape measure from the track coach - the kind they use to measure the long jump and triple jump. We go out in the hallway and we roll out the tape measure. Mover one goes to the starting point indicated on their card. The timekeeper starts the timer and calls out the time as mover 1 follows the instructions on their card. The first time is just a practice one so that the data collectors can figure out about where they need to be in order to record their data. They measure where the movers back heel is at the times indicated on their card to the nearest foot. Once the data collectors get an idea of where they need to be, the mover repeats their walk and we record the data. We repeat this process for the other 4 movers.

We go back to the classroom and I give them the handouts where they will make tables and graphs for each mover. We have the data collectors call out their information for each mover so we can all fill our tables out together. Then the students create the graphs.

Once all of the graphs are made, we try and figure out what the secret instructions on each movers card was. I ask questions like:

Where did they start? How can you tell?
What direction(s) did they move? How can you tell?
Did they ever stand still? How can you tell?
Did they ever speed up? Slow down? How can you tell?
What was their displacement? Total distance traveled?
Which mover moved fastest? Slowest?

There are many other questions that naturally arise from the graphs, and it's interesting to see the kids come up with their own conclusions about the movement.

This activity leads right into the introduction to particle motion and all of the vocabulary associated with it.

There's an associated activity called "Moving with Technology" that uses a CBR/CBL and has the kids create graphs that meet certain criteria.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15504319184275421843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534832837851416764.post-11251535592021861592016-05-16T11:13:00.000-07:002016-05-16T11:13:06.013-07:00Creating GIFs to Show LearningThis past weekend I was fortunate enough to get to attend #TXGOO16 in Frisco, Texas. It's the Techs4Tex Texas Summit featuring Google Apps for Education. I attended six different sessions and learned so many amazing things that I can use in my classroom, but I wanted to share my FAVORITE thing - student created GIFs to show learning.

Here's a couple that I created:

It was so fun making these! And you REALLY have to think through the problem step by step to make sure you show ALL your thinking in the GIF - I love thinking of the students having to go through that kind of thought process when making these!

Graphing a Line GIF- Google Slides

Function Graph to Derivative GIF - Google Slides

I started by creating the images using Google Slides. You just make your first slide that shows the problem, then duplicate the slide and show the first step. You keep duplicating the slide and then making a change until you get to the end of the problem. Then you download each slide as a jpeg. I used gifmaker.me to create my GIFs - you just upload your jpegs in the order you want to them to appear in the GIF. I set the animation speed on both of these to 1000 and then you just click the big "Create GIF Animation" button on the right hand side of the page. Once the GIF is created, you'll see a link that says "Download GIF". Voila! I cannot wait to use this as an assessment tool next year!

Despite the best of intentions, I know I haven't blogged much in the last couple of years. I'm hoping that is going to change going into next year. But I thought I could try and get the ball rolling with my blogging again by sharing what I came up with for reviewing my Algebra I students for the STAAR test this year.

The first thing I did was teach my students the "Five STAAR Strategies". On the day of the test, we gave each student a pencil with colored stickers on it to remind them of these strategies. The first strategy was "Fix Your Formula Chart" which simply means for them to add a few useful things to the formula chart before they even begin answering questions on the test. I gave them a "blank" copy of the formula chart to practice fixing every day at the start of class for the month leading up to the test.

Then I found this amazing website and immediately downloaded all of the worksheets. I combined the worksheets for each Reporting Category into two files - one containing all of the Readiness Standards for that Reporting Category and one containing all of the Supporting Standards for that Reporting Category. In case you aren't familiar with the blueprint for the Algebra I STAAR, the Readiness Standards make up 60-65% of the test, so we started with them.

I would work the problems on the worksheets out with my students together in class one day, and then have them complete a Quizizz containing similar problems the next day. The problems on the worksheets came from the 2013 released STAAR and old TAKS tests. The problems on each Quizizz came from the 2014 and 2015 released STAAR tests. (I gave the kids a hard copy of the questions because some of the problems are hard to read on the Quizizz.)

We ended up not having time to do very many of the supporting standards, so I went through and picked out the ones I thought would be very easy for them to understand and remember, like independent/dependent, function/not a function, parent functions, and intercepts.

We won't get results until right before school is out, so I don't know how effective all of this was, but I really liked the structure of it. There are SO MANY problems that can be worked using the "GRAPH" and "TABLE" features of the calculator, so I think it really helped for the students to see that and get practice doing it.
Before I came to this school, I had never been on a campus with freshmen (both of my prior schools were 10-12 campuses). My first year here, I taught Algebra I and AP Calculus AB. The next year I traded my Algebra I classes for Pre-AP Pre-Calculus classes and that's what I taught for the next nine years. Late last year, my principal, <strike>informed</strike> asked me to teach Algebra I this year. Algebra I is the only math class with an end of course exam in Texas, so he wanted to buck the tradition of the most senior teachers teaching the upper level classes while the newest teachers taught the lower level (and often more high stakes) classes. So here I am, teaching Algebra I for only the second time in my career. We have new standards, new curriculum, new textbooks, and all three of us teaching Algebra I have limited or no experience with the subject.
Since I got my Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction last December and would eventually like to move out of the classroom and into an instructional support role, I am embracing this new challenge! So expect to see a mix of Calculus and Algebra I resources on this blog.....
Today I'm going to share an Algebra I foldable I made and used today. It gives a simple review of Integer Operations. I gave it to my students to put in their interactive notebooks and then gave them 18 problems out of our new textbook to practice using the foldable.
Finishing up my Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction took more of my time than I had anticipated, so my blog didn't get updated as I had planned for it to. But hopefully this year will be a different story! I enjoy the self-reflection that blogging provides, and I love sharing things with my fellow educators! It's very cathartic!
I've had a change in my teaching assignment this year. I'm still teaching AP Calculus, but I'm no longer teaching Pre-AP Pre-Calculus. I'm now teaching Algebra I. In Texas, students are required to take five End of Course exams in high school in order to graduate. The only math EOC they must take is Algebra I. My principal decided last year that he wanted the most experienced teachers in each department to teach those courses that have an EOC and I fit that bill :) So here I am, starting my 17th year of teaching and I'll be teaching a course I've only taught one other time. While I'm sad to no longer be teaching Pre-Calculus, I have to admit I'm excited about getting to mix things up and get out of my comfort zone a little bit!
I wanted to kick off my renewed blogging efforts by sharing a resource that a colleague of mine told me about and that I think will prove to be invaluable this year. It's planbook.com. It's an online lesson planning book. It costs $12 a year and you can try it out for a month before you have to pay. You can set up what components you want to have in your lesson plans, which is nice because we have to include vocabulary, an open and close, and our state standards in our lesson plans. It's very easy to make changes by copying and pasting, deleting, or even shifting your lessons forward or backward a day as needed. You can even share your lesson plans with administrators, parents and students using a link or you can even embed your lesson plans directly into your website! How your lesson plan book looks and how much information you share are highly customizable. Probably my favorite feature though is how easy it is to document and keep track of your standards. National and state standards are embedded into the program. All you have to do is select the standards you're using and then check the ones associated with your lesson that day. The program even keeps track of how many times you teach each standard and on what days it was taught. You can then print this list to a pdf document to share with a supervisor if you need to. I definitely recommend checking it out!
Where has the time gone?!? I honestly can't believe I'm that old!

I'm going to continue using Standards Based Grading and Interactive Notebooks this year. I'm also going to get serious about my flipped class. I kind of dropped the ball on it last year - I just took on too much and something had to give. I'll finish my Master's degree on October 26th, so I'm hoping I'll be able to do a better job keeping up with the videos. When I quit making the videos last year my students would ask if I was going to start back up again because they loved them!

I've been crazy busy this week with staff development and trying to finish up my classroom makeover, but I thought I'd go ahead and share a couple of things.

First off, my classroom! It makes me so happy to walk in and see my chevron wall and cheery yellow paint. And I finally had them replace my stinky dirty carpet with tile.

I'm going to spend the first few days of school setting up Interactive Notebooks and introducing my students to my TI Nspire calculators (I'll also be talking up my beloved Desmos). Here is a basic calculator reference sheet I made for their notebooks. I plan on making calculator guides like this anytime they learn how to do something new with them.

I really wanted to buy a set of radian protractors for my classroom, but I just can't spend the money on something that we really won't use for long. Luckily inspiration hit and I came up with my own version printed on old transparencies (I mean who even uses an overhead projector anymore?!?). When we first start talking about radians and I'm trying to get them to understand what a radian is and how it relates to degree measure I'm going to have them use these to measure and draw angles in both radians and degrees. I'm pretty stoked about it! I made a little pocket by sealing an envelope and cutting it in half. They can store their protractor in the pocket. It's just so cute!

So here it all is in one post.

I started polynomials with the end behavior activity that I blogged about before. After the activity, I gave them this foldable to summarize what they'd discovered:

We then took our first assessment over polynomials. Up to this point, all of the polynomials we had worked with were already factored and had rational zeroes. To prepare to work for polynomials that weren't factored and that had irrational or imaginary zeroes, we took a day to talk about synthetic division (something they have already done in Algebra II). I gave them this for their notebook and we did a worksheet from Kuta over synthetic division.
We then took our second assessment on polynomials.

Next up was Rational Functions. Day 1 was a foldable and a little worksheet to practice using the foldable.
Rational Functions Flower Activity

Our second day with rational functions found us doing this activity I got from Rebecka Peterson. I <3 Desmos!
Rational functions day 3 was this matching activity I found on Teachers Pay Teachers. Students worked in pairs to match up all of the cards.
Day 4 was this asymptotes sudoku puzzle, also from Teachers Pay Teachers.
Day 5 - Rational Functions Assessment

So there's a quick and dirty rundown of what's been going on in my class the last couple of weeks. I REALLY like how I did this unit this year. With the graphing technology available to students, I feel like things like Descartes Rule of Signs and the like are just outdated and unnecessarily confuse what should be a simple concept like the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. My students really seem to get that the number of zeroes a polynomial function has is determined by its degree. They get how to determine end behavior and they get what effect the multiplicity of each zero will have on the graph. Their first line of attack in finding zeroes is to use graphing technology and then they know they can use synthetic division and the quadratic formula if they can't get the whole picture just from their calculator.
Following polynomial functions with rational functions let them further see the value of being able to find zeroes of polynomials as the zeroes of the numerator and denominator are used to find holes, x-intercepts, and vertical asymptotes. They were such pros at finding zeroes at this point that analyzing and graphing rational functions was a piece of cake!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15504319184275421843noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6534832837851416764.post-89128884955547477992014-03-20T12:30:00.001-07:002016-05-16T07:20:45.048-07:00Converting Polar Coordinates and Polar Graphing Foldables
The fabulous Janelle Graham over at The Dog Days of Math posted this Zombie Attack power point game on her blog. She was kind enough to e-mail it to me and I modified the questions to be about integration using u-substitution. I'm so excited to try this out with my AP Calculus students today!

I then had them try figuring out a few coordinates in this Geogebra Activity.

Once they felt comfortable enough, I turned them loose to play Polar Coordinate Battleship with a partner. I was shocked at the number of kids who had never played or even seen the board game battleship before, so we had to take a few minutes to explain the basics, but then they were off. Calling out the coordinates was a slow go at first, but those who stuck with it quickly got much better at it.
I recently found this amazing website called Kahoot! Kahoot! is a game based classroom response system. You can create your own quizzes, surveys or discussions and your students can access them on their device. It's completely web-based so it works on all platforms and the best part is it's free! Don't have time to make your own quiz? Browse the over 30,000 public quizzes to see if there's one that will work for you. I made my own Kahoot! over finding area of oblique triangles and my students LOVED it. Once you create your own account, you can play my Kahoot! by clicking the link below:
